Heroes (and heroines)

Posted on Sunday 13 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

In our current topic on heroes, we have been learning about three important people – Malala Yousafzai, Rosa Parkes and Leonora Cohen.

Ask your child what these women have done and why they were heroines.

This week, we’ll compare Malala, Rosa and Leonora to see how they are similar and different.

Thank you to Sasha and Edris who have brought in books from home to support this topic.

Year 2 Skipping Stars

Posted on Friday 11 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

What an active week we’ve had – cricket and skipping!

We’ve had a brilliant morning with six other primary schools at Armley Leisure Centre for the Skipping School Year 2 festival.  There was some fantastic skipping on display and all children got a chance to show the skills they’ve been learning at school and at home over the past few months.

We feel very proud of the children’s achievements   It’s been great to see how the children have improved and shown resilience when learning the new skipping skills.  A special well done to our medal winners.
‘It’s been so much fun!’
There are a few spaces available for the Thursday skipping after-school club every Thursday if your child would like to take part.
Well done, Year 2.  Keep skipping!

Earlier in the week we took part in a cricket festival. It was a lovely day. We practised lots of different skills and really enjoyed it. Here are a few action shots of the day!

Big Pedal

Posted on Wednesday 09 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

Thank you to all pupils and families who took part in the Big Pedal initiative over the past two weeks by scooting or cycling to school.  It’s great to see children continuing to make these active journeys to school to reduce congestion, increase physical activity and improve mental health.  We’ll be awarding the Big Pedal prizes in our assembly on Friday.

Well done to Reception class who made the most journeys by bike and scooter, followed by Year 4 and Year 3.

We’ll also be getting involved with Walk to School week, 21-25 May.  Watch out for a whole school homework all about our local area and routes to school.

Skipping festival Friday 11 May

Posted on Wednesday 09 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

It’s a busy, active week this week and our next trip out is for the Year 2 skipping festival on Friday.

The classroom will be open from 8:45am to allow extra time for registration as we are leaving school at 9am.

Children should come to school in their indoor PE kit with their uniform in a bag to change into when we return to school.

We are getting back to school during lunchtime so all children need to bring a packed lunch to have when we return to school.

Please also ensure your child has their water bottle in school on Friday and they can bring a fruit snack for the morning too.

If you have any questions, please come and ask.

All Stars Cricket Festival

Posted on Wednesday 09 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

This afternoon, Year 2 spent a very enjoyable, hot and active afternoon at Old Leos cricket club taking part in the All Stars cricket festival with other Year 2 children.

All the activities involved skills associated with cricket – bowling, batting, aiming at a target, catching and throwing.  The children put great effort into each activity.

Tom from All Stars cricket will be visiting school next week to deliver sessions for Year 1 and Year 2 and a whole school assembly where the children will find out the All Stars cricket programme at local clubs.

We even had a star cricketer who impressed the organisers with his skills.

Thank you to parents who helped to transport the children and for the loan of booster seats.

Capacity and volume

Posted on Tuesday 08 May 2018 by Mrs Taylor

Today, we’ve continued our maths learning about measurement looking at capacity and volume.  We’ve been investigating, using different measuring jugs, cylinders and containers, different capacities with millilitres (ml) or litres (l) as our units.

Tanvi had spotted this morning that her sun cream bottle had a capacity of 200ml and this afternoon at our cricket festival we estimated how much water we had left in our water bottles (not much in the heat today!).  Have a look at the labels on household items to find their capacity.  For example, milk bottles, sauce bottles, toothpaste and other liquids.

Taken from the Year 2 age related expectations, here are the related objectives we’ve been learning.

24. choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels
25. compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =

We used a word study to consolidate our learning.

Here are some example questions of how this learning might appear in a KS1 maths reasoning SAT paper.

Also, take a look at Mathletics as new activities have been assigned for the children to follow up this learning at home.
