Time Travellers
In Year 3, we have officially launched our new topic – Time Travel.
During this topic, we’ll specifically focus on transport through the ages.
Wednesday afternoon kicked off with reflecting on our school trip, sharing what we could remember, and looking at some pictures, from our trip to the Transport Museum and Hull and East Riding Museum.
The class then worked together to jot down some questions that they would like to investigate throughout our Time Travel topic. Have a look at some of the questions the class had, below:
- Lewis: ‘What did the first hot air balloon look like?’
- Vedant & Jai: ‘When was the submarine invented?’
- Hashim & Christina: ‘How long would it take to travel to the moon?’
- Sukhmani & Harpreet: ‘Who was the first person to travel into space?’
- Sam & Evie: ‘Who was the first woman to travel into space?’
- Madison & Aadil: ‘Where did the inventors get their ideas from?’
- Sasha & Klara: ‘How much money did the first chariot cost?’

Living and Learning
So far, in our Living and Learning sessions we have talked about the importance of the following 8Rs – being ready, being responsive, taking a safe risk and being responsible.
This week, we are specifically focusing on being resourceful and resilient.
We talked as a class about persevering and how it isn’t just about keeping going. Being resilient can also be about trying a new approach.
The class were set a task where they were challenged to build a tower, one meter tall. Some building blocks were placed on their tables to use. However, there was a trick as none of the children had enough blocks to construct their towers. After a brief conversation, the children had to be resilient and resourceful and search for things in the classroom to use. See the pictures below.
At the beginning the session children said that they didn’t think they were very resilient. However, by the end of the session children said that this had changed and that they understood what being resourceful and resilient meant.
Edris said: “I now feel I can be more resilient!”
Vedant stated: “It was a hard task… balancing the blocks as it kept falling over. So we got the glue sticks to help make it stronger.”
Billy added: “I went to look for some resources to make our tower taller. When I came back Sasha had already used the basket on the table. It was brilliant!”
Well done year 3!

Time Travel trip
To kick off the new topic, Time Travel, Year 3 enjoyed a trip visiting two museums in Hull – The Streetlife Museum of Transport as well as Hull and East Riding Museum.
The day started with the Streetlife Transport Museum. In the museum, there were transport artefacts dating back over 200 years old. The class were interested in the carriages that people used to drive before cars were revolutionised into what we are used to today. Have a look at the pictures below!
The class loved walking down the 1940’s high street. They thoroughly enjoyed going inside the traditional pharmacy and cooperative supermarket. They even managed to spot some products which are still on sale now.
There was a lot of interest with in the 1950’s ice-cream truck. Look at one of our brilliant drawings below.
After lunch, the Year 3s went on to the Hull and East Riding museum where we walked through an Iron Age village, entered a Roman bath house and looked at the stunning mosaics. Have a look at the pictures below.
My favourite part was…
- Billy stated: “I loved seeing the woolly mammoth.”
- Edris added: “Imagine if we were in the museum and the woolly mammoth came back to life!”
- Sasha pointed out: “The cave man’s clothes have come from a sheep – he would’ve made it himself!”
- James commented: “I loved the ride that showed us what it would have felt like to be pulled in a carriage by a horse.”
- Tanvi said: “I loved all of it!”
Super swimming start
After a lot of anticipation and excitement, Year 3 have started their swimming lessons. The class thoroughly enjoyed their first lesson.
In our topic lessons, we’ve been learning the seven continents of the world, how to use an atlas and when/why people would choose to use a map rather than an atlas. We’ve begun our topic art project by sketching the continents, paying particular attention to the outline and shape to each.
In maths, we’ve continued to learn about place value. Children have been using counters to play game and test their partner’s knowledge. We’ve been practising reading these representations of three digit numbers and then saying these numbers out loud.
We’ve also been outside during maths to practise doubling and halving.
During our homework review, on Thursday, the class shared their creative pieces with each other. We’ve been seriously impressed with the level of creativity the class has shown. Well done, Year 3!
Best of British themed menu
Catering Agency, our school meal provider, will be running a special themed menu on Thursday 04 October.
Please contact the office, by Wednesday 26 September, if your child would like a school dinner on this day.
KS2 fruit tuck shop returns on Tuesday 25 September
Our popular Key Stage 2 fruit tuck shop runs every Tuesday playtime and regularly sells about one hundred portions of fruit.
The dates for the tuck shop for this year are:
- Autumn term: Tuesday 25 September 2018 to Tuesday 18 December 2018 inclusive
- Spring term: Tuesday 08 January 2019 to Tuesday 26 March 2019 inclusive
- Summer term: Tuesday 16 April 2019 to Tuesday 16 July 2019 inclusive
This year, we’ll continue with the pre-payment option so that you pay in advance for the whole year for your child to have fruit from the tuck shop. We know that some children like to buy more than one portion of fruit, either for variety or to top up their packed lunch and we can also offer the option of paying for two items.
As an incentive for selecting the pre-pay option, we’re able to offer you one week per term free. Therefore for this year, you would pay for 32 weeks and receive fruit for 35 weeks. The cost for one portion of fruit for this year is £6.40 and the cost for two portions is £12.80.
Please note that payments are non-refundable and should be made via School Gateway. If you prefer your child to pay in cash on a weekly basis, that’s fine – we’ll continue to operate this system. Each portion of fruit costs 20p.
If you would like to pay in advance for your child to visit the tuck shop, please do this via School Gateway, under the payment option, by Friday 21 September 2018.
Thank you for your support for the fruit tuck shop.
Living and Learning
As we return to school, we begin our Living and Learning theme with a focus on manners: I can greet someone politely.
We’ll then continue by thinking about the ‘8 Rs for learning’. This theme is about promoting good learning behaviour for your child.
Each week, we’ll focus on two different ‘Rs’. We use an animal to symbolise each ‘R’, which might help your child remember all eight – can your child remember which animal matches the correct ‘R’?
You can support your child at home – we’ve listed a few ideas to help you below. Ask us if you’ve any questions or comments.
Download top tips for promoting the 8Rs for good learning behaviour.
I can show I am ready to learn.
Make sure your child is at school for a prompt start of 08:50.
Make sure your child has had plenty of sleep so they are alert and ready to learn at all times.
Encourage your child to ask lots of questions – that shows they want to learn!
I respond to feedback.
Ask your child if they remember their ‘stars’ and ‘steps’ in English and Maths.
I take a safe risk.
Talk about the difference between a safe and unsafe risk. At school, we want your child to take a safe risk by having a go at answering, even if unsure; trying something new and attempting harder learning.
I take responsibility for my own learning.
Provide time and space at home so your child is able to organise themselves: their PE kit, reading book, homework, spellings and tables… Don’t organise everything for them!
Make a link between rights and responsibilities: your child has the right to a great education, but needs to be responsible for their own learning.
I am resourceful.
Encourage your child to be organised so they can play with a range of different toys.
Encourage your child to try new ways to solve a tricky problem.
I am resilient.
Encourage your child to keep going! Set a tricky challenge or puzzle for your child to do.
Encourage your child to think of different ways of doing things.
Don’t let your child win when they play a game – they need to experience losing, too!
Celebrate mistakes as opportunities to learn – be happy that your child found some learning hard and encourage them to ‘bounce back’ and learn from the experience.
I remember.
Make sure they have time to learn spellings, number bonds and times tables – a little practice daily is best.
Play memory games:
Kim’s game: show them objects for 30 seconds… can they remember all the objects?
Can they build up the sequence, ‘I went to the shop and I bought an apple’… ‘I went to the shop and I bought an apple and a bike.’… ‘I went to the shop and I bought an apple, a bike and a cucumber.’ etc … Take turns!
I reflect about my learning.
Talk with your child about what they’ve learnt, asking questions about:
how they learnt
why they learnt it
when they’ll use their learning
how they would teach this to someone else
what learning might link with what they’ve learnt today etc
As well as covering the 8Rs for learning, pupils will also learn about their rights and responsibilities.
Finally, we end the half term learning about democracy (one of the British Values). All children have the opportunity to experience democracy in our annual School Council elections. More details to follow.
Our full Living and Learning long term plan is available on the health pages and you can keep up to date with our weekly Living and Learning statements on the parent noticeboard in the playground and also on the school calendar.
