Year 6 Class News

Merry Christmas!

Posted on Friday 18 December 2020 by Miss Wilson

We had a fantastic final day celebrating all our hard work this term!

Even Santa himself turned up!

I’d like to thank every single person in Y6 for their amazing attitudes in what’s been, at times, a tricky time.

Well done and enjoy the break!

Living and learning: RSE

Posted on Thursday 17 December 2020 by Miss Wilson

Over the last three weeks, we’ve been learning about RSE – relationships and sex education.

We’ve learnt about such a wide range of topics, from what happens during puberty to how to maintain healthy relationships with friends, family and others!

We’ve learnt that our emotions might change a lot but that nothing is permanent and we know how to help ourselves. Reading about inspirational people who have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions and hearing stories from members of our class really made us feel better. We’re all in this together!

We’ve covered a lot of science over the last three weeks and feel much more knowledgeable! Teamwork has also been a huge factor in what we’ve been doing, as has listening carefully and contributing thoughtfully.

“At first, I thought it’d be nerve-wracking but now I think it’s been so helpful because I know what might happen in future,” said Hifza.

“It’s been very helpful even if it was a bit strange at times!” laughed Joude.

Noah said, “It’s been very interesting learning about RSE. It’s really just learning how humans have survived and reproduced as a species.”

Merry Christmas from Y6

Posted on Tuesday 15 December 2020 by Miss Wilson

We’re rounding off this term after oodles of hard work and some truly fantastic learning with a mini medley of Christmas songs – the class even had a go at writing one themselves!

Have a very Merry Christmas from Y6 and enjoy the video!

Santa dash Friday 11 December

Posted on Wednesday 09 December 2020 by Mrs Taylor

Leeds North East Schools Sport Partnership is delighted to be supporting the School Games National Santa Dash 2020 on Friday 11 December and we are excited to be taking part.
During the school day, each class will have a time when they can run, walk, skip, hop around the school grounds to get active.
Children can wear their PE kit and are encouraged to add some festive cheer by bringing a santa/elf hat, some tinsel, antlers or painting their nose red. These should be brought to school and worn for the Santa Dash only.
There is no monetary contribution needed for this event.

Impressive Improvements

Posted on Wednesday 09 December 2020 by Mrs Weekes

This young lady has shown amazing resilience over the last few months. She came to share this amazing arithmetic score with me yesterday – 34 out of 40. Her smile says it all and she was very proud to tell me that since September, she has more than quadrupled her score! Absolutely amazing!

School menu change and Christmas meal

Posted on Sunday 29 November 2020 by Mrs Taylor

We really appreciate your patience regarding school dinners and the choices we have been able to provide.  We’ve been very conscious that changes needed to be made and a hot dinner offered wherever possible.  Over the next few weeks, we’re going to trial a menu on a two week rota and if this is successful, then it will be carried on after the school holiday and reviewed again.
There are two options each day, a vegetarian and a meat option but there is one day a week which is ‘meat free’.
We’re not in a position to resume ‘normal dinners’ but this is a step in the right direction. Click here to see the new menu and we encourage you to discuss and share the options with your children.
We are also able to offer a Christmas dinner option on Thursday 10th December. Please inform the office if your child would like a school meal on this day.

Living and Learning: Anti Bullying

Posted on Thursday 26 November 2020 by Miss Wilson

This week, Y6 were tasked with showing they know how to stop bullying in a creative way.

Here are some of their amazing submissions.

Super stop motion

Anti-Bullying PowerPoint

The Day the Bully Strikes

No bullying presentation

We also have had some brilliant talks this week surrounding how to be respectful (and ensure it’s mutual respect), how to be a little bit friendlier, how to deal with conflict if it should arise and how to communicate you’re not feeling OK or not happy with an interaction.

As always, I’m super proud of this class’ honesty, maturity and creativity with their homework.

It was great to see some fantastic spellings being practised, too!

Take a look!

Virtual after-school sport club

Posted on Wednesday 25 November 2020 by Mrs Taylor

We know you are missing attending after-school clubs at the moment, whether it is in school or out of school, so here is some information about a virtual after-school club that can be done at home.

The Youth Sport Trust have taken the step to deliver a free virtual after school club as part of a national response to the second lockdown. The 30-minute club will take place at 5pm each weekday and be led by a different member of the YST’s athlete mentor network. These will run until 18 December.

Aimed mainly at primary-aged children, a different theme has been assigned for each day of the club – Adventure Monday, Tuesday Play, Wild Wednesday, Thinking Thursday and Fun Friday.

History: pyramids

Posted on Thursday 19 November 2020 by Miss Wilson

Why did the Ancient Egyptians build pyramids? Y6 know!

After researching some cool facts (check them out below), we made and decorated our pyramids with our information and even some hieroglyphics.

One of our History words is the Rosetta Stone

Albie said, “The Rosetta Stone was found in a fort near Rosetta, Egypt. It has three different languages on it: cursive Egyptian, Greek and hieroglyphics. Scholars knew Greek and cursive Egyptian so they used it to work out what the hieroglyphics meant.”

Rayn said, “It’s now located in the British museum and it was found by a soldier!”

Leo said, “It was found by a captain called Pierre in 1799 and in 1801 it was transported to the British museum. In 1802, they managed to find out what the hieroglyphics meant!”

Safiya-Mishal said, “I found this task easy and hard. Finding facts was easy but when we came to actually sticking the pyramid together, mine kept falling apart but I had help from Yusayrah!”

Hifza shared, “I found it challenging because you had to fold every part carefully and use the glue to put it together. Finding out the facts was interesting because there was lots of things I hadn’t learnt before.”

Maths: fractions

Posted on Thursday 19 November 2020 by Miss Wilson

This week, we’ve started a new topic of tricky fractions!

I’ve been so impressed with how we’ve learnt to find equivalents, add and subtract and convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and back again.

Take 2 and 1/3 for example:

Yusayrah said, “First, you multiply the whole number by the denominator. 2 wholes  x 3 = 6 or 6/3 (six thirds). Next, you add the extra 1/3 to give you a total of 7 thirds because the denominator always stays the same. The answer would be 7/3.”

Challenge your child to do the opposite of this and explain how to convert an improper fraction such as 7/4 (seven quarters) to a mixed number!
