Year 5/6 new class novel
After the holidays, Year 5 and 6 will start a new class novel: The Boy in the Tower. Here’s the blurb to give you a sneaky peak.
When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily, as if they tiptoed into the world when we were all looking the other way.
Ade loves living at the top of a tower block. From his window, he feels like he can see the whole world stretching out beneath him.
But one day, other tower blocks start falling down around him. Strange, menacing plants begin to appear and no-one knows where they came from.
Now their tower isn’t safe anymore. Ade and his mum are trapped and there’s no way out…
Here are some reviews:
Carol Singing
Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 got into the Christmas spirit by performing some carols outside Marks & Spencer’s. We had a great time and raised some money for a charity at the same time. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch and all the members of the public who were generous enough to donate some spare change.
Road Safety Pantomime ‘The Gift of Life’
Yesterday, all pupils watched this lighthearted show that delivered important road safety messages.
Pupils joined Santa and Rudolf as they travelled back in time to prevent young Neil Downe from being knocked down. Whilst being fun and interactive, the pantomime covered the following road safety themes:
- the Green Cross Code
- seat belts
- be bright, be seen
- safer cycling
Ask your child about the performance and what messages they took away.
Fantastic creative maths
I was really impressed with the Creative Homework this week. There were all sorts of great ways to shows when and how we convert measures, many of which we’re going to keep in class for the children to use during lessons.
Spelling homework this week
We were practising homophones this week and so tried to write homophone groups into one sentence. Here are some good examples of the children’s work.
After Christmas, when children are given a list of words to learn, it is important that the practice they do in their books is regular. Completing a page of ‘practice’ in one night won’t help them to learn these spellings. I’ll be asking the children to date their practice with a signature from an adult to show that they’re practising little and often throughout the week rather than all in one go.
Allerton Grange Trip
Today, Year 6 visited Allerton Grange School to do some PE. Basketball, football and shot put were the sports we played. We developed lots of skills: dribbling and shooting for basketball; passing, control and communication for football; and accuracy for shot put.

Community Homework
Last week’s homework was to show that we know what community is. We really enjoyed looking at this work as there were all sorts of different pieces to enjoy.
Super Spellings
Just some examples of some really great spelling practice when children are given a list of words to learn.
Check your child’s spelling work before they bring it to school on Thursday and see whether their presentation is the best they’re capable of and that they feel they’ve put enough effort in to their practice.
Cross Country qualifier
Congratulations to Grace in Year 6 who finished 6th in the Year 6 girls Leeds East North East Cross Country race at Cardinal Heenan school last week to qualify for the Leeds final next year.
Well done to all children who represented school in traditional cross country weather. For some of the children, this was the first time they have taken part in a competitive event and spirits were still high despite the weather.
Packed lunches
On Monday, Caitlin Kitson, Nutritionist and Healthy Eating Adviser, delivered a whole school healthy eating assembly. The main focus was the importance of healthy packed lunches.
We talked about the different food groups on the Eatwell Guide, why different proportions of each food group are important for our bodies and how to achieve this in a packed lunch.
It was great to hear the children’s excellent knowledge of the Eatwell Guide when answering Caitlin’s questions.
At Moortown Primary, our packed lunch guidance includes:
- information about the different food groups
- how to put together a healthy, balanced packed lunch
- links to recipes and ideas for healthy packed lunches
Following the assembly, all children were given a copy of our packed lunch guidance and the Eatwell guide.
As an alternative to packed lunches, school meals, including a vegetarian option, are prepared daily in our kitchen and children are offered a choice of main courses and desserts. Children select their main meal choice at the start of the day. Catering Leeds provides food which meets national Food Standards criteria. School meals can be combined with packed lunches.
Free school meals are available to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. They are also available to some older children according to family income. It’s important to register for entitlement to free school meals, even if your child has a packed lunch or is in a younger class – this is so we can receive additional funding (called the pupil premium) which we can use to help your child.
