22 April 2016

The homework for this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 27 April.

I can create some flower art.

As we are learning about flowers (specifically sunflowers) in our mini-topic, I would like children to create some art using flowers or plants as a stimulus. They could:

  • find a green space and sketch or paint some flowers
  • sketch or paint a vase of flowers
  • create a collage
  • use flowers or plants to create a piece of art
  • focus in on one particular part of a flower or different flowers – such as petals or leaves

The homework this week is practice makes perfect and is due in on Wednesday 30 March.

I can write instructions.

We’ve been writing instructions in our English lessons over the last couple of weeks. Children could write a recipe; instructions / directions for finding a place (this could be a treasure map); instructions for how to do, play or make something.

Follow the instructions below to write perfect instructions:

How to write instructions

Follow this simple guide and you’ll be writing instructions in no time!

You will need:

  • paper
  • a pen or pencil
  • coloured pencils or felt tips (optional)
  • photographs (optional)
  • ruler

Method:

  1. Firstly, find a quiet place and get all your equipment ready.
  2. Next, think carefully about what you are going to write about. It might be a good idea to read some different types of instructions before you start. Think about your audience (who will be reading and using the instructions).
  3. Write a title which clearly tells the reader what the instructions are for.
  4. Write a short introduction which gives the reader a little bit more detail about the instructions.
  5. Write down the equipment or ingredients that you will need using bullet points.
  6. You are now ready to write your instructions! Use numbered points to make your commands easy to follow. Each new command should start on a new line.
  7. Try to use time connectives (firstly, next, after that, finally) to also sequence your instructions. Adverbs (carefully, quickly, silently) Give more information to the reader about how to do something.
  8. Add in a ‘top tip’ or a ‘did you know’ box to give readers some extra relevant information or to give them extra ideas or suggestions about what they could do.
  9. Read through your instructions to make sure that there are no errors. If there are errors, fix them!
  10. Improve your instructions by adding in an extra words like time connectives, adjectives or adverbs. You could also improve them by adding in a question and a question mark (?) or find an exciting sentence in your text which could have an exclamation mark (!)

Top tip:

Pictures, diagrams or photographs really help give the reader a clear idea of what to do. Add a few in. Imagine building flat-pack furniture with no diagrams!

Should we keep animals in zoos? Should we even keep animals as pets?

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 16 March.

I can design a flowerbed.

We’ve been asked to take part in a competition to design a flowerbed as part of ‘Leeds in Bloom’. The competition is open to all children in Leeds and the winner will have their design planted into reality somewhere in the city centre.

The guidance advises that children’s designs are a pattern or collage rather than a garden scene or picture.

The homework this week is creative and is due in on 2 March.

I can show what I have learnt about 2D shapes.

In maths lessons this week, we’ve learnt the names of different shapes and how many sides and vertices (corners) they have. We’ve also learnt about symmetrical shapes and patterns. We’ve sorted shapes according to their features, drawn shapes and built animal faces using different shapes in a topic lesson.

Here are a few ideas we came up with in class:

Create a different animal using shapes. This animal could also be symmetrical.

Look at different flags and decide if they have lines of symmetry or not.

Conduct a shape hunt, finding the different 2D shapes in your house and garden.

Create your own game, where contestants have to guess the names of shapes after you have described them.

It’s half-term…

…so there’s no homework this week. Enjoy the break – walks to spot the first signs of Spring, restful reading huddled up at home, or whatever else you get up to!

For all children in Year 1 – Year 6, the homework this week is talk time and is due in on Wednesday 10 February.

I can prepare a speech (School Council elections).

or

I know the importance of voting.

It’s time for children to consider if they would like to stand for election for our new School Council.  With two representatives from each class, chosen democratically by their peers, all children at Moortown Primary are encouraged to take an active part in pupil voice.

Elections for our new school council will take place next Thursday 11 February with our polling station and ballot boxes at the ready.  Candidates will have the opportunity to give their election speech to their class on Wednesday 10 February.

What makes a good school councillor has been considered by our current school council.

  • ‘Communicating with others – pupils and adults.’
  • ‘Having good listening skills to know what to contribute in meetings.’
  • ‘Thinking of realistic ideas to suggest in meetings.’
  • ‘Considering other people’s views even if you don’t agree with them.’

Hints for your speech include:

  • What skills and abilities would a good school councillor have?
  • What are you particularly good at that would help you to be a great school councillor?
  • What do you think would make the school better? What could you do that people would really like?
  • Think of things that are realistic, maybe that you could do yourself, rather than having to ask other people to do?

Thank you to our current school councillors for all their ideas and contributions over the last year.  We hope you have enjoyed this role and responsibility and you are welcome to stand again for election.

Good luck to all children who decide to stand in the elections.

If you choose not to stand in the election then you should consider the importance of voting.

The homework this week is talk time and is due in on Wednesday 03 February.

What does it mean to be alive?

This statement could be explored in a scientific or spiritual way… or both.

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 27 January.

I can show what I have learnt about length.

For the past few weeks in maths, we have been learning about length. We’ve measured in metres and in centimetres and then compared the length, height or width of different objects. We’ve solved problems involving length as well, using our calculating skills.

For the homework this week, the children should show their understanding of length. They could…

  • measure some objects at home and compare their length
  • measure the distances that they have walked or driven over the weekend
  • write some problems involving length for people to solve
  • look at how different people use measuring in their jobs or hobbies

…or anything else that gets them mathematically creative!

This week, the homework is creative and is due in on Wednesday 20 January.

I can show what my favourite animal is and can explain why I like it.

This homework will start off our big topic, Life, which focusses on living things and their habitats.

You could create an animal poster, interview, story, top trump card, model of the animal.
