Year 4 Spelling

27 April 2018

The children have been asked to put the spellings that they were given last week into sentences. Another alternative is to link this in with our 2D shape learning.  It would be great if the children could get creative with the words.

One possibility is to create shapes and write the word inside.

This spelling revision could link in with the homework set this week.

Can you link your spellings into your shapes?

This week, we’ve continued learning about words that end in a ‘shun’ sound. The children have been given some sentences and they need to write them out into their homeworks books. They need to add the appropriate ‘tion‘ word and underline it.

Presentation is important in all books and we expect to see a high standard of well presented work in homework books, too!

For some children, this needs to improve!

Times tables

By the end of Year 4, the children need to know all times tables. This includes the 11 and 12 tables also. Along with the multiplications, the children also need to know the division facts for each calculation.

4 x 6 = 24                     24 divided by 4 = 6

6 x 4 = 24                     24 divided by 6 = 4

Next week, the class will be tested on the 6 and 7 times tables.

Next Friday, 14 June, we will have our final spelling test of the year. Words will be chosen at random from the statutory word list for Year 4.

Each child has been given another copy of this word list to use for practice. All the words have been covered throughout the year. Test your child by picking words at random, asking them to spell them and highlight any they are struggling with for more practice.

The children will be tested on 25 of these words.

Good learning!

Due to there being quite a few tests in class this week, we have decided to keep the same spellings as last week. Children need to learn these ready for a test on Friday 25 May.

In the front of homework books, there is a spelling guidance sheet. This gives examples of different strategies to aid learning spellings. Children have been told to use ideas from this to help.

Dictation is another great way to help with spelling and punctuation.

This week, the children have been given three spelling activities. They need to use these to help them to learn the words given last week.

Consonants and Vowels

Write your spellings words; use a blue coloured pencil for consonants and a red coloured pencil for vowels.

Stair steps

Write your spellings as ‘stair steps’.

Alliterative Phrases or Sentences

Choose five of your spelling words and write five alliterative phrases or sentences. An alliteration uses the same initial letter. You may include a word or two that does not begin the same letter. Be sure to underline your spelling words.

Examples: cooling condensationimportant instruction, every emotion explains experiences.
