homophones

This week’s spelling list is formed using words that sound the same but are spelled differently. The activity this week is to write a silly story using all of the homophones. Be as crazy as you like, as long as you use the right word! Practise hearing the word and choosing the correct version for your sentence.
  • there/their/they’re
  • your/you’re
  • our/are
  • to/too/two
  • which/witch
  • where/wear
  • of/off
  • of/have (as in shouldn’t have)

This week’s spelling list has been formed by asking Year 5 for some spellings that they always seem to have difficulty with! It seems there is good reason though – some of these are really tricky! Just log on to Spelling Shed as normal and as always, come in to see me if you need any help. Make sure it’s before next Thursday, though!

I’ve been very impressed by Y5’s enthusiasm and effort when using Spelling Shed and we’re definitely starting to see it pay off in the classroom. Top work, Y5.

This week, there’s no word list. Instead, children need to recap and practise one of our key spelling rules: double up for a short vowel sound.

Here are a few examples of Y5 appropriate words which contain a ‘double up’:
accommodate
aggressive
communicate

Children should find and practise other, similar words. They may find examples in their reading books or in previous Year 5 lists.
