These are some homophones that Year 6 need to learn – remember it’s not the spellings that are tricky but knowing when to use them. This means you need to practise using them in sentences correctly.

Here are some homophones that we should be using correctly already (but don’t). Practise using these correctly too.

There’ll be no test next week. Instead we’ll see how our homophone learning is going, identify some we’re finding more difficult and then we’ll be tested on them the following week.
We will be working on the 2 times table next week which the children will be tested on on Friday 14 September. Because we should know our two times tables inside out, we’ll be working on known facts, such as:
- If 4 x 2 = 8, 4 x 20 = 80
- If 6 x 2 = 12, 6 x 0.2 = 1.2

This week’s spelling homework is a little creative and is due on Thursday 24 June.
Using these Greek and Latin roots and their meanings, create your own animals where their name gives you an idea of their appearance and/or behaviour.
Eg punctata quadrocornisbiped (dotted four-horned two footed animal). Create at least five different names and then choose one to draw and write a paragraph informing us about it.

This week’s spellings link to our class novel and the sailing we’ve done at Yeadon Tarn. I’ll be asking the children to spell ten of the sailing terminology on the diagram below and there’ll be extra points available for being able to identify where it is on the diagram and even more for if they can say what job it has. These spellings will be tested on Friday 15 June 2018.

This week there’ll be no homework or spellings for Year 6. We’ve worked really hard this week and are all ready to face next week confidently and with a smile. By not giving any homework, it allows the children to take ownership of their own learning and, if they want to do anything over the weekend to prepare themselves, they can choose what that may be. Feel free to use a page of the Homework Book to do some practice.
You could:
- Try some arithmetic calculations
- Be tested on spellings from the Year 3/4 and 5/6 list
- Write some sentences and see which words you can label with their word class
- Think about the different areas of Maths and what you need to know for each of them
We’re all ready so I look forward to seeing 29 smiling faces at breakfast club on Monday morning (8.30 sharp).

For the rest of the year, Year 6 won’t have a specific list of spellings. Instead, they should think about the spelling skills they need to develop (from the list below) and create their own spelling practice. There will be a test each week and, along with this, we’ll discuss the sorts of spellings we’re finding more difficult.
- tion/ssion/sion/cian endings

- ant/ent/ancy/ency/ance/ence endings

For spelling this week, the children have looked through the Year 5.6 spelling list and chosen 15 words which they feel they need to practise.
Create ways for you to remember how to spell these words and generally practise using the strategies in the back of your homework book. Don’t forget to try adding prefixes and suffixes to the words. Spelling practice is best done little and often so make sure you come back to the spellings at least three times in the week. Date your practice and ask an adult to sign it to show that you’re practising regularly. There will be a test on Friday 16 March.
