Fun in the sun

Posted on Monday 09 May 2016 by

We had some fun in the sun today and we had some very proud moments. Children who, in the past, couldn’t jump up high enough to reach the higher equipment in the playground can now do it! We’ve been determined and resilient… and we’ve grown a bit taller too! IMG_0090

As the sun was glaring down on us, some children made a safe choice to enjoy their fruit in the shade.

Money

Posted on Monday 09 May 2016 by

Today, we began learning about money in maths.

We talked about why we need money and what we can do with it. The children had some wishful ideas about what you could buy with 50p! After that, we looked at the coins more closely and sorted them. We’re only looking at pence this week so just the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins. Next week, we will look at pounds and will include notes.

Further into the week, we will be adding using coins, for example, a 5p, 2p and 1p coin makes 8p altogether.

Food diary

Posted on Monday 09 May 2016 by Mr Catherall

This week, as part of our food topic, we’ll use our knowledge of healthy eating to analyse our own diets. We gave everyone (including me) a food diary to complete tomorrow (Tuesday). It’s very self explanatory and we need it for our learning on Wednesday.

Children should complete the diary as accurately as they can and bring it with them to school on Wednesday. It should only take five minutes to complete.

It case it gets lost, it looks like this:

Thank you

This week’s spellings are all homophones. Homophones are two or more words that sound the same but are spelt differently and mean different things. For example: fair (a place with rides and games) and fare (the cost of public transport).

  • grown / groan
  • eight / ate
  • woman / women
  • heard / herd

Your child also needs to find their own pair (not pear!) of homophones which they will be tested on.

Under the sea!

Reception listened with interest and enthusiasm to our expert!

Miss Rushbrooke came to tell us all about her diving experiences and the children had lots of questions to ask.

I think she has inspired them all to become divers!

Domestic Violence

Posted on Saturday 07 May 2016 by Mrs Weekes

Moortown Primary School has been given the opportunity to take part in a new project that will run jointly between schools and West Yorkshire Police. It has been established to support children who are resident in households where there are incidents of domestic violence and abuse. The initiative has been designed to provide confidential notification to schools on any incidents of domestic violence and abuse which occur within a child’s household that might have an impact on a child whilst he or she is in school.

We know that children can be significantly physically or emotionally hurt, either by being present in the house or directly witnessing an incident of domestic violence. The project will ensure that a member of the school staff is trained to use the information that has been shared, in confidence, so that the school is able to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children or their families. We are keen to offer the best possible support to our pupils and we believe this is going to be beneficial for all those involved. If you would like further support or information about domestic violence and abuse please go to www.leedsdomesticviolenceandabuse.co.uk. The member of staff who is specifically trained is Mrs Weekes.

The homework for this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 11 May.

My favourite toy-  Create something wonderful to go on our new ‘toys’ display wall.

We are beginning a new big topic! ‘Toys’ was chosen by the children and I am looking forward to lots of great learning. As we begin our topic, it would be lovely to begin filling our display with some wonderful creative work!

If you want your homework on display, it needs to be possible for me to put it up!

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect and is due on 11 May.

I can practise using pronouns.

In English, we have been using pronouns in our book review writing. A pronoun is a word or phrase that can be used in the place of a noun. We use pronouns to avoid repetition in a paragraph. Your child has a series of activities to help them practise using pronouns.

This week, the homework is creative and is due in on Wednesday 11 May.

I can design a toy of the future.

We’re starting a new topic about toys next week and this homework aims to get children thinking about what their dream toy would be or what toy children may be playing with in the future.

I grew up dreaming about hoverboards (I was never very good on a skateboard) and am still disappointed no one has managed to create one.

Ask your child what their dream toys would be and get them to sketch it. They should include labels and annotations about what material the toy will be made from or what a part’s function is. Your child could even build a prototype to give us an idea of what your toy would look like!
