This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 02 June 2015.
I can work with fractions and time (Mathletics assigned tasks).
Log on to Mathletics and you will see that you have been assigned three tasks and a test on fractions and time. See if you can complete these on your own using the ? button to help if you get stuck. If your child has any problems logging on to Mathletics, let me know and I can give him/her time to complete this activity in school.
You don’t need to write anything in books for this. I will make a note as to whether the activity has been completed or not when homework books are handed in.

The homeworks this week are both Practice Makes Perfect.
The first is an English homework. Children have a section from the Alice in Wonderland book. Their task is to rewrite this text as a script. Children should remember to include stage directions to tell the actors how they should say something or how they should move across the stage.
The second homework is a Mathletics activity which checks children’s understanding of angles. They have to compare and estimate the size of angles.

The spellings this week are all homophones (words which sound the same but have different meanings or spellings). The words are listed in pairs and children may be tested on any of the words. As the spellings sound the same, they will need to understand the context that the word is read in.
Group 2 should learn all of the words.
Group 1 do not have to (but are encouraged) to learn the bold words.
1. | where | wear |
2. | weak | week |
3. | our | are |
4. | new | knew |
5. | bean | been |
6. | past | passed |
7. | through | threw |
8. | aloud | allowed |
9. | guessed | guest |
10. | weather | whether |
If you go down to the woods today…
What a great morning. Year 2 took a walk to the woods to have a look at the different types of trees we could find. Isaac turned out to be our nature specialist as he was able to tell us the names of many common trees just by looking at their leaves. Everybody had a great time and all of us were really excited about our topic learning.
Perfect planter
Having worked so hard on planting our seeds and making sure they’ve got the best environment to grow, we’ve now planted them outside in our new Y1/2 planter. Come down past the dining room to see how they’re doing. We’ve got nasturtiums, sunflowers, courgettes, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and broad beans growing. Hopefully, we’ll have another planter soon to get all of our seedlings outside.
What’s happening this week?
Green Fingers continues and we’re moving our growing outside. New school planters have arrived so this week will see us building and planting in these. We’ll move the seedlings that have been getting on so well in the shared area into the planters to see how they do in the outside world. On Wednesday we’re going to go to the park as our learning moves from flowers to trees. We’ll be exploring the local environment to see what trees we already know the names of and which we can identify using the shape of their leaves.
Maths – Returning to multiplication means times table practice is, as always, extremely helpful for our learning in class. Go counting crazy as you walk up the stairs, travel in the car, walking to school; you could even try the 3 and 4 times tables in preparation for moving into Year 3. As part of multiplication, we’ll also be working with money so if you go to the shop and buy 3 oranges at 50p each, see if we can tell you how much by using our 5 times table knowledge.
English – Entering the world of SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), we’ll be recapping nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Use Post It notes to label your house’s nouns then go round again and add an adjective to each one. Play verb charades then make it harder by adding an adverbs.
- common noun – a thing (you can precede with ‘a’ or ‘the’) like ‘the table‘ or ‘a dishcloth‘
- adjective – add information to the noun like ‘a square table’ or ‘the wonderful garden’
- verb – an action like ‘to sing‘ or ‘to dance‘
- adverb – describes how, where or when you perform an action like ‘I sang beautifully‘ or ‘I danced on the table’

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Wednesday 24 June 2015.
I can show what grows around me.
Get out and about, either into your garden or walking through the streets and parks, to see what plants you can see.
- Are there flowers, trees, fruit or vegetables growing in the world around you?
- Which can you name and which can you not?
- Are there any plants you see over and over again?
Show us in any way you like what grows around you.
Maybe you want to…
- Draw pictures.
- Take photographs.
- Create an information booklet.
- Film walking around and noticing plants around you.
- Describe the plants you find.
- Make a quiz to see if others can name what you see.

The homework this week is creative.
I can show and explain what a half is.
In maths lessons this week, we’ve been learning about fractions. For their homework, I’d like children to prove to me that they know what a half is. To do this they must also think about what a half isn’t. They should show their explanations in any way they like: annotated diagrams, pictures, photographs, videos, a story.
