What is a force?
Our creative homework has stirred some interest this week; some of the homework that the children have done is amazing! The mini-topic on forces has meant that we are creating pulleys for a lighthouse keeper so he can get his sandwiches (think of the wonderful books about The Lighthouse Keeper!). We’ve also been looking for different forces around school. Here’s one of the great Creative Homework pieces that have grabbed our interest this week:

This week in our spellings we are learning how to drop the ‘e’ for ‘ing’.
By adding ‘ing’ to the end of the verb, we have to drop the ‘e’ from the route word. For example, implore with an ing added becomes imploring.
route word | ing added |
implore | imploring |
ignore | ignoring |
frustrate | frustrating |
write | writing |
promote | promoting |
loathe | loathing |
aggravate | aggravating |
discourage | discouraging |
Pirates!
Ahoy, me hearties! Shiver me timbers, thar be an action-packed final term awaiting ye scallywags of Year 3 and 4 this term.
To get into the spirit of the topic, every child will be able to choose their own pirate moniker (nickname). During the topic…
- we’re going to build life rafts and test their effectiveness
- we’re going to research real pirates from the past and present as well as some mythical pirates
- there’s going to be lots of drama this term as we unravel history in exciting and fun ways!
- we’ll be looking at the pirates’ grub, and whether their diet matches that of a healthy child at Moortown
- last, but not least, there will be (of course) a treasure hunt – but non’ like ye’ve ever done before!
Fair winds, matey!

I know the five times table.
We love to write!
Reception children can’t stop writing! Keep encouraging your child at home to write letters, lists, notes and birthday cards. Fold a piece of paper to make little books for story writing. Let them see you write, too!
Welcome!
Welcome to Hassan who joined Year 1 this week. He has made a positive and enthusiastic start at Moortown Primary. The children in Year 1 are very pleased to have a lovely new friend!
20 April 2012
The homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 25 April 2012.
I know about push and pull forces.
We’ve started a new mini-topic for science; we thought it would be good to see what children know about forces.
Children should show creatively something they know about the topic. Some ideas:
- a poem
- a poster
- some facts
- an observational drawing
- research using ICT
- own idea
